Santino Chuor and Peter Dut came to America from a Kenyan refugee camp after escaping the Sundanese revolution that killed their parents and many of their family members. The documentary follows their adjustment to America as teenagers and as immigrants told to "bring something back someday" to Sudan. The filmmakers capture the Lost Boys' lives during the course of a year with an "unblinking, observational style."
This 2003 Crystal Heart Award Winner for Best Documentary gains new relevance today as one of the Lost Boys, Lopez Lomong, competes on the 2008 United States Olympic Track & Field Team. “When we were in Africa, we didn't know what was there for us as kids--we just ran. God was planning all of this stuff for me, and I didn't know. Now I'm using running to get the word out about how horrible things were back in Sudan during the war.” |
